The Pachycrocuta was the largest hyena to ever live, weighing up to 110 kg (240 lbs). It lived during the Pliocene and Pleistocene epochs. Unlike modern spotted hyenas, it was a specialized "mega-scavenger," capable of crushing the largest bones of prehistoric megafauna to access marrow that other predators could not.
